Club Membership
Dear Prospective MYC Member,
Thank you for interest in becoming a member of the Mattituck Yacht Club.
Our club has a rich history. It was founded in 1910 and incorporated in 1912 as
a club "to promote among its members interest in sailing, boating, fishing, nautical
amusement, and athletic exercises; to cultivate social interactions among its members
by means of meetings, outings, picnics, excursions, games, and dances…"
Over the past 90+ years the club has evolved. We have held to the original charter
of cultivating social interactions by having a multitude of social events for members
throughout the summer. However, we have eliminated motor boating and fishing, and
today we are focused primarily on sailing, we have a sailing program for children
8 to 18 and we sponsor several Sunfish class sailing races throughout the summer.
Social events throughout the summer include annual events sponsored by the club
such as the Commodore's Barbeque, Pancake Breakfast, and Cocktail Party. In addition
to the annual events there are member sponsored events. Example of past member sponsored
events include Greek Night, Italian Night, Movie Night, Bowling Night, Duck's Game
Outing, Canoe Trips, Splish Splash Outing, Costume Party, Game Night, and Teen Dances.
All of the events are open to the entire family with the exception of the Cocktail
Party which is adults only. In addition, most of the events are either free of charge
(e.g. Commodore's Barbeque), have a nominal charge to cover expenses (e.g. Duck's
Game), or are on a donation basis (e.g. Cocktail Party theme baskets for Chinese
Auction, or Greek/Italian Night).
There are three active types of memberships: Family, Couples, and Senior. Family
includes parent(s) and all children under 21. A couples membership is for any two
related persons 21 or over living in the same household. A senior membership is
for any single individual 21 or over. Membership includes participation in club
events, use of the club and facilities for sailing, listing in the blue book, receipt
of all club mailing, and the option to rent a rack to keep your Sunfish at the club.
Family membership also enables you to sign-up your children for the sailing program.
There is currently a waitlist for our sailing program and current members enjoy
priority status for the sailing program. A fourth type of membership is a Sustaining
Member. A sustaining member is a former MYC member who wants to keep in touch with
the club (they receive mailings and have a listing in the blue book), but does not
want to participate in club activities, use the club, have a rack rental, or have
any children in the sailing program. A sustaining membership is a good way to put
your membership on hold if you plan to be out of town during one of our summer seasons.
Please note that at the current time there is an initiation fee for all people interested
in becoming members of the club.
The sailing program runs for 8 weeks for five days from Monday to Friday (except
for holidays and special club events). There are two sessions, morning and afternoon.
The morning session runs from 9AM to 12 Noon, the afternoon from 1PM to 4PM.
The rear-commodore, who is in charge of the sailing program, will slot the sailors
in either the morning or afternoon session based on experience and age. Because
it is generally less rough/windy in the morning, the morning session has the younger
and less experienced children (typically 8-13, with 0-3 years of sailing). In the
morning session the children typically sail with a partner or two. The afternoon
session is more competition oriented (typically 11-16, with 2-3+ years of sailing),
and sailors typically sail single.
The program is geared to the sailors participating for the entire summer, and most
of the sailors do enroll and participate for the entire summer. Some do miss a couple
of days or perhaps miss a week or two over the summer due to other activities.
New sailors are free to rent a club boat (older model Sunfish boats that have been
donated to the club) for their first year of sailing. We strongly encourage members
to buy a newer model Sunfish, new or used, as their sailor becomes more experienced.
Please be sure to return parental consent and medical release form for each sailor
when signing up.
We are always looking for members to help out by volunteering in the club. Our club
is made up of volunteers. You can help out by planning or assisting with activities
(e.g. children activity nights), joining a committee (e.g. building committee),
or running for a position on the clubs board of governors.
If you have any additional questions about membership or would like a membership
form please feel free to e-mail us at membership@myc.cc.
Regards,
Membership Committee
